Magnolia explores the possibilities of laser cutting technology. Photographs from my family tree were selected starting after they migrated from Italy to the United States (1910) up until they assimilated into Cajun culture on the Bayou Teche in Louisiana (the 1950s). Using a laser cutter on fabricated magnolia petals, these family portraits represent the fragility of remembering past loved ones – their experiences, emotions, and struggles. The vulnerability shown in the petals made the construction of a memory box all the more important – so that the petals would maintain their remaining shape and form, forever protected and immortalized despite their fragile appearance.
